“RUN WITH THE PACK”
SRFC Teams
Within SRFC we have different teams divided by age. Read more about the Guppen (U6), Turven (U8), Benjamins (U10), Mini's (U12), Cubs (U14), Juniors (U16) and Colts (U18) below. For the youth rules, click here. For the youth rules cards, click here.
Guppies (U6) and peat (U8)
Children from the age of 4 can already start playing rugby. Play and fun are the most important in this phase and that is why no matches are played in the first categories but the rules are explained in a playful way.
The Guppies (under 6 years) and the Turven (under 8 years) learn to play rugby without contact, which is called TAG Rugby.
Instead of tackling, you pull a ribbon (tag) from the opponent. TAG is therefore a playful and safe introduction to the game of rugby. Children are introduced to the sport and learn the principles of rugby (possession, moving forward, giving support, maintaining continuity or putting pressure).
As children get older, they will increasingly play the real rugby game. Safety and fun are always paramount. The youth competition only starts from the age category “Cubs”.

Benjamin (U10)
In this age group we increase sport specific skills and add basic rugby skills.
From now on the children will train and play without TAGs and learn to use their bodies. In a safe way the children will learn to make contact with shoulders and arms in the correct body position.
On Saturday mornings the teams play short tournaments with 2-3 other teams in the same district.

Mini's (U12)
This is the last age category before the children are introduced to the standard form of rugby: 15-a-side rugby on a full field. To make this last step, new rugby-specific game elements are added, such as the 5-man “contested” scrum, kicking the ball and the line-out.
We also start with position play at this age. There is no competition in Rugby Netherlands at this age group.
On Saturday mornings the teams play short tournaments with 2-3 other teams in the same district. We do not keep scores. Fun and development are paramount.

Cubs (U14)
The Cubs (U14) are for children aged 12 and 13. For the first time, they play on a full field with 15 players per team and the rugby rules are more extensive. For example, they play with an 8-man scrum and there is more attention for position-specific skills. Game tactics, teamwork and physical development are paramount during training and matches.
The game tactics and team play ensure that the players use the entire field. After all, a player cannot defend the entire field or score a try on his own. They really have to do it together now. The physical development is mainly in the condition since the field has become twice as big.
Within this age group, physical growth spurts also begin, which also helps them learn mentally. After all, they sometimes play against 'bigger' players.

The older youth (from the Cubs) will play competition. The training sessions are more and more focused on the matches and sometimes it gets tough. The older the players, the more rugby rules from adult rugby are applied. In the youth competition, the National Championship is played.
Juniors (U16)
The Juniors (U16) are 14 or 15 years old when the season starts. Within this age category, they are used to playing on a full field and the physicality of rugby. This allows the focus to be more on building strength, rules of the game and insight. The competitive element of the sport also receives more attention.
Strength building can be worked on from this age, because the body starts to grow more slowly. Of course, it has not stopped yet, so only bodyweight training is done (so no weights). This is better for the muscles and the further course of growth.
Because the field is familiar, the rules of the game can be looked at (even more). This helps to develop more insight into the field; players get a better picture of how rugby works and learn to anticipate the opponent.

Touch (16 )
Once the young wolves go home exhausted, the parents take over the field. There is an enthusiastic group of parents who train weekly and play a nice game of "touch" rugby with each other. Touch Rugby is derived from Rugby League. Tackling opponents is replaced by a touch or a Touch. The game is combined with tactics, agility, speed with good communication and passing and catching skills.
If your child is not a member, no problem, you can come and play ball. Send us a message and see you on the field!
The contribution for the Touch training is € 100.
